Get Local Y’all.
Two Atlanta brands I’m supporting the old-fashioned way, with my hard-earned dollas: King of Pops and Westside Creamery. The King, and the Prince - he prefers Baron or Duke, yeah right - are sweet and scrumptious and Maggie and Greg (Westside) are awesome people (and Greg is a bud from high school). Plus the wares they hock are top-notch.
You can check out these local sugar-dealers, as well as other awesome street food vendors, tomorrow at the Urban Food Picnic at the Sweet Auburn Curb Market.
Desert Snob: my freezer only has locally grown and made deserts. It’s okay to be jealous.
SARAH, you guys. It IS okay to be jealous. It’s only natural.
I’m so freaking excited about all of this city’s increasingly awesome things (dessert and otherwise). To be young and have our lives in front of us to watch the future of this place unfold … man! Just the sight of the words “ATLANTA, GEORGIA” on the side of our truck gets me crazy happy.
yesterday i ate lunch at the community garden in edgewood. neighborhood kids and a few awesome adults have been working in the (impressive!) garden all summer, and they just got a grant from the united way, so now they can afford to pay the aforementioned kids for their time. we grilled out, we fired up the clay pizza oven (YES THEY HAVE A PIZZA OVEN, YES IT IS SO PIMP), we ate king of pops popsicles and we tried to keep a 4-year-old from repeatedly yelling into dogs’ faces. the pastor of the church down the street was on hand to grill hot dogs, and lots of people from the local horticultural society drank watered-down pink lemonade with us alongside sugar-propelled children.
after that, i went back to my house to finish editing students’ stories for the KIPP STRIVE writing project, which rachael and i and several other awesome atlanta writing types have been involved with since spring. the stories are so good, guys. i have two favorites, both of which i’ll share in greater detail once the book is out. (there’s a book! it will be released at the decatur book festival over labor day weekend! don’t worry, there will be a deluge of notification on your dashboards and in your rss feeds!)
i’m with maggie; something wonderful is happening in atlanta. maybe it’s been wonderful all along and i’m just now getting involved, who knows. regardless, when i was a loud gangly child in southwest georgia i never dreamed that something i made would be on the side of an ice cream truck, or that i’d be friends with someone whose dreams i could help make real by doing something that’s really fun for me. i just hope we aren’t peaking young!
